Ash Wednesday (Christian) • First Day of Ramadan (Islamic)

The Door Marked "Later"

Story: Ahmad, 35, Nairobi

Ahmad had a folder on his laptop called "Someday."

Inside: a business plan he'd revised for three years. An email draft to his father — unsent since 2021. A photo of land in Machakos his grandmother left him.

"I'll do it when things settle down," he told himself.

Things never settled down.

Today, Christians receive ashes and hear, "Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Today, Muslims begin Ramadan — a month of fasting, prayer, and accountability before God. Both traditions carry the same whisper: Time is not infinite. What are you waiting for?

Joe Asiba

There's a moment in the Gospel where a man tells Jesus he'll follow him — after he buries his father. The father isn't dead yet. Just old. The man wants to wait for the convenient moment.

Jesus doesn't soften the blow: "Let the dead bury their own dead."

It sounds harsh until you realize what he's actually saying: The convenient moment is a grave you're digging for yourself.

Scripture: Luke 9:59-60

The Demand

Open the folder. Pull out the thing you've been putting off — not the whole project, just the first step. One email. One call. One hour of actual work on the thing you've been protecting with "someday." Do it before the weekend. But first: tell someone. Text a friend right now. Say, "I'm finally doing [the thing]. Ask me about it on Friday."

What Happens When You Do This

The weight shifts. Not because the project is done, but because you stopped lying to yourself. You become someone who moves, not someone who waits.

Community Prompt

What's in your "Someday" folder? Share it with one person today. Commit to the first step. Let them hold you accountable.

Prayer for the Day

God of the Now — I confess I've been waiting for a moment that was never coming. Give me the courage to begin. And give me a community that won't let me slip back into "later." Amen.
