World Day of Social Justice (UN)

The Door You're Holding Shut

Story: Composite — a hundred people across three continents

She told me she'd forgiven him. Said it twice in one minute. Each time her jaw tightened.

I've learned to notice the difference between forgiveness and amnesia. Amnesia is pretending it didn't happen. Forgiveness is admitting it did — and still releasing the debt.

Joe Asiba

Today the United Nations marks the World Day of Social Justice. Here's what that day doesn't mention: injustice doesn't only happen in parliaments. It happens in bedrooms and boardrooms. In the grudge you've carried since 2018.

Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who wrongs him. Seven seemed generous. Jesus said seventy times seven. He wasn't giving a number. He was describing a posture — a decision you make every morning when you wake up and the anger is still there, squatting in your chest like a tenant who stopped paying rent years ago.

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-22

The Demand

Write the name on a piece of paper. Not to send. Not to show. Just write it. Underneath, write: "I release the debt you owe me. Not because you earned it. Because holding it is costing me more than you'll ever pay." Then burn the paper. Or bury it.

What Happens When You Do This

The room inside you gets bigger. Space opens up. You may not feel different immediately — forgiveness isn't a feeling. But over the next week, you'll notice the name carries less weight.

Community Prompt

Unforgiveness is heavy. Who can you trust to witness your release? This weekend, gather with someone and do the exercise together. Hold space for each other.

Prayer for the Day

God of Justice and Mercy — give us the courage to release what we've been gripping. And give us a community that witnesses our freedom. Amen.
