Ramadan Week 2 continues
Story: Amara, 40, Lagos → Houston
Amara had been in Houston for eight years. She had colleagues. Acquaintances. People she waved to at school pickup.
But she didn't have a table.
Not like back home in Lagos, where her mother's sitting room was never empty. Where neighbors walked in without knocking.
One Sunday, Amara decided to cook jollof rice. Not for her family — for strangers. She invited three women from her apartment complex. Two showed up. They ate. They talked. They stayed until 11 PM.
Now they meet every month. Three women. One pot of rice. A table that didn't exist until someone decided to build it.
Some tables are waiting for you to return. Others are waiting for you to build them.
In the early church, they met in homes. They broke bread together so regularly that it became their identity. "See how they love one another." The table wasn't provided. It was created. By ordinary people who decided that eating alone was no longer acceptable.
Scripture: Acts 2:46 — "Every day they continued to meet together... breaking bread in their homes..."
The Demand
This month, create one table. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Three people. One meal. Your home or a coffee shop. Pick a date. Send the invites. Build what doesn't exist yet.
What Happens When You Do This
You become a table-builder. Someone who creates community instead of waiting for it. And you discover that others were just as hungry as you.
Community Prompt
Who will you invite to your table? Three people. One date. Don't wait for the perfect moment. Build it now.
Prayer for the Day
God of hospitality — teach me to build tables. Not perfect ones — just present ones. And fill them with people who become family. Amen.
