The Name They Gave You

Story: Grace, 28, Nairobi

She was named Grace because her mother wanted her to be graceful. Soft. Easy. The kind of woman who didn't take up too much space.

Grace grew up trying to fit the name. She spoke quietly. She apologized often. She made herself small in rooms full of loud men.

At 28, she led a team of forty. But in meetings, she still found herself shrinking. Still heard her mother's voice: "Don't be too much."

One day, her mentor asked her, "Who named you Grace?" "My mother." "And who are you when you name yourself?"

Grace had never considered the question.

Today is International Women's Day — a day to honor women who refused the names others gave them. The "too emotional," the "too ambitious," the "too much."

In Scripture, names carried destiny. Abram became Abraham. Jacob became Israel. Simon became Peter. But here's what we miss: those new names didn't erase the old ones. They replaced them. You can't claim your true name until you release the false one.

Scripture: Isaiah 62:2 — "You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow."

The Demand

Write down one label you've been carrying — something others named you. "The responsible one." "The disappointment." "The one who's too much." Now cross it out. Literally. Draw a line through it. Beneath it, write: "This was never my name."

What Happens When You Do This

You begin the work of renaming. Not a one-time event, but a practice. Every time the old name surfaces, you'll have a new response: "That was never my name."

Community Prompt

What label have you been wearing that you didn't choose? Share it with someone today. Let them witness you crossing it out.

Prayer for the Day

God who renames — speak my true name over me. And give me the courage to release the false ones. Amen.
