The Day in View
Sukkot — Day Six
International Day of Older Persons
International Coffee Day
Global Pattern: Gift • Dependence • Memory • Gratitude
Three very different calendars meet today. Sukkot remembers a people learning dependence in the wilderness. Older Persons Day turns our attention toward generations whose lives have already carried knowledge, labour and memory. Coffee Day draws attention to something many of us encounter almost without thought: a cup placed into our hands.
The Question the World Is Asking
What have I received that I quietly behave as though I produced?
At six in the morning, the coffee trees outside Baricho, Karatina were still wet with dew.
Njeri stood beside her grandmother, Wanjiku, at the edge of the family shamba.
The older woman moved slowly now. Her knees no longer allowed her to walk the rows as quickly as she once had. But she still noticed things Njeri missed.
“That tree is struggling,” Wanjiku said.
Njeri looked at the tree.
“It looks fine to me.”
Her grandmother smiled.
“You are looking at the leaves. I am looking at the tree.”
Njeri laughed.
She had come from Nairobi the evening before to spend a few days with her grandmother. She now owned a small coffee shop in Kilimani. It had taken years to build. She had worked long hours, borrowed money, learned the business, survived difficult months and eventually turned a tiny rented room into a place where people came for coffee and conversation.
She was proud of it.
She had every right to be.
“This is the first thing I have really built for myself,” she had told a friend recently.
For myself.
The phrase had sounded harmless.
That morning, standing beside Wanjiku, it began to sound different.
Her grandmother pointed toward the trees.
“Do you remember that one?”
Njeri shook her head.
“I planted it before you were born.”
She pointed to another.
“That one your grandfather planted.”
Then another.
“That one came after the drought.”
Another.
“That one nearly died.”
Njeri listened.
The conversation moved slowly through decades she had never lived. Her grandfather. School fees. A failed harvest. Neighbours who had helped. A teacher who had encouraged her. An uncle who had paid for an exam when the family was short of money. Her mother walking to town for work. Her own childhood. The first notebook in which she had learned to write. The first cup of coffee her grandmother had ever let her taste.
Njeri suddenly realized that her life looked very different when viewed backward.
She had built something.
But she had not begun with nothing.
Nobody begins with nothing.
She had begun with people.
Their dreams, their labors, their prayers, their failures and success.
With land she did not make.
With knowledge she did not invent.
With a language she did not create.
With sacrifices she only partly understood.
With opportunities that had arrived through hands other than her own.
She looked down at the coffee cherries hanging from the branches.
“How much of this did you actually plant?”
Wanjiku smiled.
“Not as much as you think.”
They both laughed.
Then her grandmother became quiet.
“None of us begins alone, Njeri.”
The sentence stayed with her.
Later that morning, Njeri opened her phone and looked at photographs of her café.
The polished counter.
The bags of roasted beans.
The sign above the door.
The young people she employed.
The customers who had become friends.
For the first time, she did not look at the photographs and see only her achievement.
She saw a long line of hands.
Some visible.
Some forgotten.
Some already gone.
And she understood something uncomfortable.
The café really was hers in one sense.
But it was never only hers.
Kingdom Interpretation
We are accustomed to asking: What have I achieved? Less often do we ask: What have I received?
Achievement draws the eye forward. Stewardship asks us to look backward first.
Before there was something in my hands, something came into my hands. Before I could cultivate, someone cultivated. Before I could teach, someone taught. Before I could speak, someone gave me language. Before I could stand, someone carried me.
This does not make our work unimportant. It makes our work relational.
The Kingdom does not erase human agency. It places human agency inside a larger story.
Stewardship begins not with management, but with recognition.
Can I see the gift before I begin arranging it?
Can I recognize the people behind what I possess?
Can I receive without immediately converting the gift into utility?
That last question may be harder than it sounds.
We have become very good at asking what things are for.
What can this relationship do for me?
What can this education earn me?
What can this influence accomplish?
What can this property produce?
What can this opportunity become?
But sometimes the first faithful question is much simpler:
What is this?
Perhaps it is a gift.
Perhaps it is something entrusted.
Perhaps it carries another person's labour inside it.
Perhaps it carries a generation's sacrifice.
Perhaps it carries God's generosity.
And perhaps gratitude begins when we stop treating gifts as though they appeared because we were clever enough to deserve them.
The human vocation is therefore not to create the world, but to receive what God has made, tend it faithfully, and participate in its flourishing.
The Kingdom Thread
There is a movement here worth noticing.
In September, we learned that identity is something we receive before we attempt to prove our worth.
October takes that truth one step further.
Perhaps my identity is not self-created.
Perhaps my life is not self-created either.
That changes the meaning of stewardship.
I am not merely managing resources.
I am responding to gifts.
I am not merely protecting possessions.
I am tending what has passed through my hands.
I am not merely building a private future.
I am participating in a story that began before me and will continue after me.
The question is no longer:
What can I make out of my life?
It becomes:
What will I do faithfully with the life I have received?
James 1:17
“Every good and perfect gift is from above.”
Genesis 2:7
“Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.”
Before humanity works, humanity receives.
Before humanity builds, humanity breathes.
Before humanity tends the garden, humanity is given a garden.
The first posture of a creature is therefore not possession.
It is reception.
The Revealing Question
Do not answer quickly.
What have I received that I quietly behave as though I produced?
There may be something in your life you are genuinely proud of. Do not despise that achievement. Look deeper into it.
What helped make it possible? What did I inherit? What was given to me? What changes when I stop calling all of it “mine”?
The Demand
Name three things you have received that you did not create. Choose one. Trace it backward. Name the person, generation, place, system, sacrifice or gift that helped bring it into your hands. Give thanks before you ask what you can do with it.
That is today's practice. Not accumulation.
Recognition.
✙ Prayer for the Day ✙
Master Weaver,
Open my eyes to the gifts I have mistaken for possessions.
Show me the people whose hands are hidden inside my life.
Show me the generations whose faithfulness made room for mine.
Show me the places, the soil, the stories, the knowledge, the sacrifices, and the mercies I did not create.
Deliver me from the illusion that because something is in my hands, it began with me.
Teach me to receive with gratitude. And when I finally see the gifts clearly, teach me what faithfulness requires.
Amen.
Hidden Thread · Genesis → Revelation
Genesis begins with gift. Creation is given. Life is given. Breath is given. The garden is given. Then comes the calling to ?abad and šamar—to serve, cultivate, work and keep. The fracture comes when the creature begins reaching for what has been given as though it must be seized and possessed on independent terms. The biblical story repeatedly returns to this tension.
Israel received manna, land, covenant and vocation, learning dependence in the wilderness. The prophets challenge abundance when it becomes entitlement. Jesus teaches stewardship. Revelation ends with creation restored, not as humanity's private possession and God dwelling with humanity.
The final picture is not people clutching what they accumulated. It is creation flourishing under God's presence. The gift was always leading somewhere.
There are gifts we cannot receive until we stop trying to prove that we deserve them. The journey from shame toward wholeness begins with the discovery that our deepest identity is not something we manufacture. Perhaps stewardship begins in a similar place: receiving before proving, gratitude before control, gift before possession.
The Thread Forward
The very act of receiving creates relationship.
Once something has been entrusted to us, another question inevitably follows:
What does receiving make me responsible for?
Relationship creates responsibility.
Something entrusted to us will become something placed in our care. That is where TEND begins.
