The Day in View

International Day of the Girl Child

Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan

Global Pattern: Renewal • Potential • Dignity • Beginning Again

October 11 is the International Day of the Girl Child, a United Nations observance now in its fifteenth year. The 2026 theme calls attention to girls' rights, freedom to learn, grow and shape their futures.

The same day, the Jewish calendar marks Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan — the head of the new month — continuing into October 12. Rosh Chodesh means "head of the month." It functions as a semi-festive day of spiritual renewal, a fresh start built into the rhythm of an ordinary year.

Two very different calendars meet today, and both ask a version of the same question: who is permitted to begin again, and who is permitted to grow?

The Question the World Is Asking

Who is permitted to begin again — and who is permitted to grow?

In a small apartment in Netanya, Naomi lit two candles on the first night of every new Hebrew month, a practice her mother had kept, and her grandmother before that. Her son once asked why she marked something so small.

"It is not small," she said. "It is the moon starting over. It reminds me that I am also allowed to start over."

"Every month?"

"Every month. Whatever went wrong in the last one does not have to define the next one."

He watched her light the second candle. "Even the bad months?"

"Especially the bad months," she said. "That is the whole point of a new moon. It does not wait for you to deserve it."

At a school in Accra, on the same ordinary Sunday, Ama kept her hand down.

Her teacher had asked for volunteers to answer the arithmetic problem on the board. Three boys raised their hands immediately. Ama knew the answer too. She always knew the answer. But her hand stayed on the desk.

After class, her teacher, Madam Adjei, kept her back.

"You knew that answer."

Ama looked at the floor. "I thought boys were better at these things."

Madam Adjei crouched down to Ama's height. "Who taught you that?"

Ama did not have an answer. No one had ever said the sentence directly to her. It had simply arrived — from an uncle's joke, a textbook illustration, a classroom where boys were asked first and girls were asked to be patient.

"Nobody taught me that," Ama said slowly. "I think I just... noticed it."

"Then notice something else," Madam Adjei said. "Notice that I am asking you now."

Weeks later, her hand began rising. Not every time. Not without a small flutter of fear. But it rose — the way a new moon rises, not because the sky owed it anything, but because that is simply what the sky does next.

Joe Asiba

Kingdom Interpretation

Naomi's candles and Ama's raised hand are asking the same question in two different languages.

One asks it of time: does the past get the final word over what comes next? The other asks it of a person: does what has already been decided about me get the final word over what I am still permitted to become?

Rosh Chodesh answers the first question with astonishing simplicity — the moon disappears completely, and then it returns, and nobody accuses it of presumption for doing so. Stewardship asks us to extend that same mercy to people. Growth is not owed to those who have proven themselves. It is owed to everyone, the way a new month is owed to everyone, on the far side of every previous month, good or bad.

Every classroom, every home, every calendar quietly answers a question nobody says aloud: whose beginning again is expected here, and whose is merely tolerated? A steward pays attention to that question before it becomes visible in the data — the wage gap, the empty seat, the silence where a voice or a fresh start should be.

Anchor

September asked us to receive our name before we tried to prove our worth.

October has been asking what we do with a life once it has been received.

Today those two months meet, in two places at once.

A name received in shame will not go on to steward anything. A person taught that their voice does not matter yet will not, without help, believe their care matters either. And a life convinced that its last chapter is its final one will not reach for the next page.

Dignity and renewal are not two separate subjects from stewardship. They are the soil it grows in. This is why Rosh Chodesh and the Girl Child are not a coincidence sharing a date. They are the same mercy, spoken twice — once over time, once over a person — so that neither of us mistakes it for a rule that applies only to the other.

Matthew 19:14
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Proverbs 31:25
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
Lamentations 3:22-23
“His mercies are new every morning.”

The Soul-Stare

We sometimes say: She is too young to understand. He will grow out of it. That chapter is closed for me. That is just how things are done here. The phrases are ordinary, but they can quietly foreclose a future — someone else's, or our own — as though certain doors only open once. What would change if, beneath every "that chapter is closed," there were also a quieter question: "And what is God still permitted to begin again — in her, or in me?"

The Demand

Notice whose voice is routinely overlooked — in your home, your classroom, your workplace, your church. Create space for it today, deliberately and out loud. Then name one thing in your own life you have quietly written off as finished. Treat this month as evidence that neither verdict is final.

✙ Prayer for the Day ✙

God of every future and every new moon, keep me from deciding in advance who is worth investing in — including myself on my harder months. Teach me to tend possibility wherever I find it, especially where the world, or I, have already stopped looking. Give me Madam Adjei's patience and Naomi's candles: the kind that keeps asking, and the kind that keeps beginning again. Amen.

Hidden Thread  ·  Genesis → Revelation

In the beginning, God made humankind in his own image, male and female, and pronounced the whole of it very good — dignity was never a modifier added later. Israel is given new moons as fixed points of renewal in Numbers 28, built into the calendar itself, not earned by the month before. Daughters are named in the census lists of Numbers; Zelophehad's daughters ask for an inheritance and the law changes to include them. Isaiah announces a former thing giving way to a new thing springing up. Jesus receives children the disciples try to turn away. Paul writes that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation — the old has gone, the new has come. Revelation closes with the One on the throne saying, "Behold, I am making all things new" — not for the deserving only, but for everyone still permitted to grow.

The Thread Forward

Beginning again and growing are not two different gifts. They are the same gift, received on two different days of the calendar and two different days of a life. Once something — or someone — has been permitted to start over, tending resumes. That is where the rest of TEND continues: not in grand gestures, but in the ordinary Wednesdays that follow every new moon.
